My carpet cleaning advice
Most people don’t give much thought to the best way to clean their carpet or if they have the best carpet steam cleaner on the market today tucked away in their closet. That’s because the commercials of many carpet manufacturers have made it seem like it is almost impossible to dirty their carpets. And while it is true that most carpets are stain resistant, let me tell you that no carpets are stain proof. I’m here to tell you that what kind of steamer you have is just as important as how you clean your carpets. If I didn’t think that was the case, then this site wouldn’t exist.
In the past, cleaning your carpet was something that was kind of hard to do. It usually required hours of back backing work and sometimes that wasn’t even enough. The carpet required to be replaced anyway. Which is why it is so great that modern carpets are a lot easier to clean. However, like I said, just because they’re easier to clean than they used to be, that doesn’t mean they’re a snap. A little bit of work and due-diligence is still required to get your floor as clean as possible.
I feel that it is important to learn about the features of the top carpet steam cleaners so you can choose one that will do the job and has features that will complement your cleaning style. It is also important to learn how to clean carpets so you can get the most out of said steamer. Which is why I’ve decided to write this guide today. I am not only going to tell you the features that differentiate an average steam cleaner from the best carpet steam cleaner, but I am also going to give you some professional tips on cleaning your carpet. And to top it all off, I’m going to end it all with some carpet steam cleaner reviews. We’re going to accomplish a lot today, but don’t worry, we are also going to have quite a bit of fun as well.
The Top Secrets & Tips For Steam Cleaning Carpets
Before we discuss the best carpet steam cleaner for your home, I thought that it would be nice to give you some tips that will help you maximize your cleaner. If you use the following tips, then you are sure to get the most out of any cleaner that you buy.
The first thing that you should always do before you clean your carpet is to remove anything that may be on the floor and the furniture. Make sure that you get everything out of the room. This will speed up your cleaning session and will make sure that you’re best carpet steamer can get to all corners of the carpet.
After you have moved everything from the room, you can then thoroughly vacuum it. You should vacuum the floor from two different directions to ensure that you get all the debris out of the carpet. First, do a normal vacuuming and then do one from a 90-degree angle. This will ensure that all of the debris is removed from the carpet.
The next thing you’ll want to do is to spot clean the carpet. There are a number of different spot treatments available to carpet or you can go with one of the old-fashioned methods. The old-fashioned methods include using club soda to get out wine or letting toothpaste sit on the stain for 10 minutes and then wiping it up. If there’s gum in the carpet fibers, you can use a piece of ice to cool it down so it comes up easily. On some stains, you can use a combination of vinegar and lemon. However, whatever stain remover you choose to use, be sure to test a small corner of the carpet first to make sure it isn’t going to ruin it.
Even the best steam carpet cleaner won’t do a good job on your carpet if you don’t operate it correctly. Which is why it’s important to thoroughly read the manufacturer’s instructions and clean the carpets in the recommended way.
The last tip that I want to impart to you is the necessity of having a schedule. You want to make sure that you clean your carpet on a regular basis. That keeps messes from piling up and keeps you from having to spend hours upon hours cleaning your floors. If they are cleaned regularly, then the work will be done quicker.
Most experts agree that you should vacuum your floor on a weekly basis. Any more than that and you risk wearing out the carpet and any less than that and you will just let debris build up. Of course, if you have pets or children you might have to adjust that to accommodate the messes they make but it is a good general guideline.
And most experts also agree that you should deep-clean your carpets anywhere from every 3 months to every 6 months. Any more than that and it becomes overkill and any less than that and you are just letting dirt build up in your carpet fibers. Every 3 to 6 months is a good general guideline.
Choosing The Best Home Carpet Steam Cleaner
When choosing the best steam cleaner for carpet floors, it’s important to take a few things into consideration. For example, one of the first things you’ll want to look for is a unit with a decent-sized cord. In my opinion, the best steam cleaners for carpet floors all have extension cords that are at least 20-26 feet.
Another thing that you need to consider is the capacity of the tank. If it is a true steam cleaner, then you want a tank that holds at least 40 ounces of water. However, if it is merely a carpet cleaner, then you want a system that holds from 5 to 10 quarts of water.
Yet another thing to think about is whether you want an actual steam cleaner, a deep clean system or one of the best steam vacuum carpet cleaner models that may be on the market today. Which really depends on what you want the cleaner to do. If you want it to sanitize without using chemicals, then you’ll want one of the many steam cleaners on the market. If you want one to pull out ground-in dirt, then you’ll want a deep-clean system. However, if you want to vacuum and steam at the same time, then you’ll want one of the best steam vacuum carpet cleaner systems that are out there today.
The last thing you’ll want to consider is how you are going to use the steamer. Are you simply looking for the best steam cleaner for carpet or do you want the best carpet steam cleaner for pets? How you use the cleaner and the circumstances in which it is used will determine what kind of system you need to buy.
The best carpet steam cleaner on my list isn’t technically a steam cleaner. It is actually a deep clean system that is designed to clean the carpets of pet owners. However, it did such a wonderful job that I feel like the Hoover Carpet Cleaner SteamVac F5914900 is good enough to be placed on the list for the best carpet steamer.
This unit weighs about 20 pounds and its dimensions are about 11.25 x 20 x 44 inches. Which gives it a decent 11.25-inch nozzle width to clean a fair amount of carpet at one time. It also has a 3 speed-brush roll that can be set too high for normal cleaning, low to gentle cleaning and off for spill pick-up. It also has separate tanks for clean and dirty water. That means the dirty tank can just be emptied and rinsed out. My only gripe about the tank system is that it is kind of small. It only holds about 4 quarts of water and ideally, I would want it to have held at least 5 quarts. That may seem like a small detail but it really does make a difference to how often you’re emptying and filling up the machine.
Now, I don’t know why Hoover decided to call this cleaner a SteamVac—after all, it isn’t exactly the best steam carpet cleaner. It’s more like one of the best deep cleaner. However, it does heat the water for cleaning your carpet. It just doesn’t heat it up enough to produce steam.
It does have quite a few things going for it. One, it has an incredible brush system that spins in all different directions. This enables it to really isolate the carpet fibers and you can really tell the difference. When I used this system for the first time, my jaw just about hit the floor. It might not be the best carpet steam cleaner, but it is one of the better carpet cleaners I’ve used in a long time. It does an amazing job at cleaning the floor.
Another thing that I liked about this system is that it came with a hand-held tool that I could use for cleaning my upholstery. And even though this system doesn’t use steam, you can buy cleaners that will sanitize your carpets.
All things considered, I feel like this was a very good system. While not technically a steam cleaner, it does an excellent job on carpets. It is also very reasonably priced, which is always a good thing when it comes to searching for the best home carpet steam cleaner.
It does an excellent job on carpets and is also priced reasonably.
- Deep Cleaning Power
- Innovative Brush System
- Lightweight & Easy To Use
- Does A Professional Cleaning Job
- Not A Steam Cleaner
- Sanitizes Only With Added Chemicals
- Not Eco-Friendly
Making it into the number three spot on my carpet steam cleaner reviews list is the Sienna Eco-Canister Steam Cleaner SSC-0312. This little system looks kind of small but it has a number of things going for it. One, it’s priced competitively with all of the other carpet steam cleaners on this list. Two, it’s environmentally friendly and three, it did a pretty fine job on my carpet.
This system holds 40 ounces of water, which translates into about 35 minutes of steam. It is also extremely portable and has a long hose so it is easy to use. And since no chemicals are required for all but the dirtiest floors, it is very friendly to the environment.
In fact, I keep mentioning that it is environmentally friendly because I was able to get up most stains on my carpet without using any chemicals whatsoever. It simply steamed them clean. And I do have to say that it got most stains out of my carpet. If it is so good, you ask, then why is it only number 3 on my list? Well, that’s because it is far from a perfect solution for carpet cleaning.
One thing that I didn’t like about the unit was that the trigger was hard to operate. Sure, you can lock the trigger but then you are stuck with no way of regulating steam. That’s not ideal for my circumstances. Another thing I didn’t like is that it didn’t have a way for me to find out if it had water in it. It would just run out in the middle of a job and then I’d have to go fill it.
All things considered, I think this is a great overall system—if you want to clean other surfaces and not just carpets. It does a decent job on carpets and can also clean a lot more surfaces. However, if you are looking for a dedicated carpet cleaner that will do the best job possible, then you might want to check out on of the other cleaners on my list. Those units did a better job at deep-down cleaning.
All things considered, I think this is a great overall system—if you want to clean other surfaces and not just carpets.
- Super Hot Sanitizing Steam
- Extra Long Hose
- 35 Minutes of Steam
- Won't Pull Up Deep Down Dirt
- No Steam Regulation

- Cumbersome Trigger
The second best steam cleaner for carpet floors on this list is the BISSELL Symphony Pet All-in-One Vacuum and Steam Mop 1543A. This is a steamer that many people overlook because they don’t have pets and at most would consider this unit to be the best carpet steam cleaner for pets and not the best one overall. However, let me tell you that this system is good for those with pets and those without.
I have poured over dozens of carpet steam cleaner reviews and have tested a multitude of steamers on my carpets and I am very confident in adding this unit to my top 3 list. That’s because it contains a number of different features that makes it a good product for cleaning carpeted floors and I think it is one of the best steam cleaners for carpet I have seen of late.
One of the great things about this product is that it has the ability to vacuum and then steam clean the floor. That is a big plus when you are cleaning your carpet. With the flip of a switch, you can go from vacuuming up the debris off of your floor to freshening it with a nice dose of steam.
And it didn’t take a long time to get the steam going either. It seems like it was just a few moments from the time I filled it with water to when I started steaming. A lot of the canister systems will take a full 15 minutes before you can have steam, but this one produced steam almost immediately. That is definitely a plus in my book.
Another thing that I really liked about this system was that it had a very long cord. The cord was about 25-feet long. That means that I could reach every single inch of my carpet without having to switch outlets. That’s a great way to clean your floors.
I also liked the versatility of this steam cleaner. You can vacuum with it, steam the floor or do both things at the same time. Which is something I stated in the full review I did for this product that is located among the other carpet steam cleaner reviews in the Multi-purpose carpet steamer reviews on this site.
While I have listed many of the positive associated with the BISSELL Symphony Pet All-in-One Vacuum and Steam Mop 1543A, I think it is now time to share some of the not-so-great things with this steam cleaner.
The first problem I had with this system is that it only produces about 15 minutes of steam. Which is almost enough time for me to clean all of my carpets but not quite. Which means that I had to refill the unit around the mid-point of my carpet cleaning. That is something that doesn’t make me particularly happy.
Another thing I really didn’t care about this unit was that it sometimes lost steam when the vacuum/steam feature was used together. It didn’t always do this but sometimes it did. I don’t think it was enough of a steam loss to make a big difference with my carpet cleaning session, but it is something worth mentioning.
While it did a pretty good job cleaning my carpets, there were messes that were too tough for it to handle. There was one particular stain that I couldn’t remove with this unit, so I would have to say that this machine is best for floors that don’t require heavy-duty cleaning. If your floor does, then you might want to consider another steamer.
The last thing I want to mention is that this steamer is a little bit more expensive than either the Hoover Carpet Cleaner SteamVac F5914900 or the Sienna Eco-Canister Steam Cleaner SSC-0312. Not by a whole lot but enough to make enough of a difference in most people’s minds.
With all that being said, it is easy to see why the BISSELL Symphony Pet All-in-One Vacuum and Steam Mop 1543A is the best steam vacuum carpet cleaner but isn’t the best steam cleaner for carpet. It is good enough of a steam cleaner to make it to the middle of this list but not good enough to make it to the number one spot.
It is good enough of a steam cleaner to make it to the middle of this list but not good enough to make it to the number one spot.
- Steam Heats Quickly
- Steams & Vacuums At Same Time
- Good Suction
- Pet Hair Can Clog It
- Not For Heavy-Duty Messes
- Only 15 Minutes Of Steam
