The Benefits & Drawbacks Of Handheld Steamers

Today, I am going to be writing about how to determine if a handheld steamer is right for your particular cleaning situation. Sure, some portable steam cleaner reviews make it sound like everyone should have one of these portable steam cleaners in their collection – including you. And for all I know, you might really need one of them. However, the only person who can really determine whether you do or you don’t is you.

After all, you might not need a handheld steam cleaner, much less the best handheld steam cleaner on the market today. It all just depends on what you need to have cleaned, your particular budget, as well as other deciding factors. A different type of steamer might be best for you.

Of course, I understand that it can be a real pain in the neck to look through dozens of handheld steam cleaner reviews, just to get an idea of whether or not you need it in the first place. Which is why I’ve decided to put together this little guide on handheld steamers. Today, we are going to ascertain whether this steamer is the right tool for you or not. That way, you can hit the handheld steam cleaner reviews and find out the best handheld steamer – if you do indeed need one. So, without further adieu, let’s find out if your needs determine whether or not you need the best handheld steam cleaner, or if perhaps another steamer would be a better fit.

The Pros Of A Handheld Steam Cleaner

Handheld Steamers Are Portable

Let’s face facts, the best handheld steamer is often the one that is the best portable steam cleaner. After all, that is one of the main advantages of them. They usually weigh around 2 to 3 pounds and are, depending on the model, around a foot tall. That means they can be carried just about anywhere in the house you need them.

Handheld Steamers Are Inexpensive

Another thing that’s great about handheld steamers are that they are usually the most inexpensive of all of the different types of steam cleaners. In fact, most of them are under $50 and some of them are even under $30.  If price is an important consideration, then this is a really big positive for you.

Great For Spot Jobs & Hard To Reach Areas

If you are looking for the best handheld steam cleaner to clean all of your carpets, kitchen floors or bathroom tiles in one cleaning, then you probably don’t want a handheld. However, if you are looking for something that will spot clean effectively, then this little machine might be right for you.

These devices are also pretty good at reaching tight corners. I’ve found that most of them can get right up to the area that needs to be clean – they are that compact. And for the ones that can’t get right up to the area that needs to be cleaned – for instance, the crack between the stove and the counter – they are often capable of producing a burst of steam that will blow the debris out of it.

Great For Killing Bed Bugs in Hotels & Motels

Sure, most steamers on the market today sanitize. Which simply means they produce steam hot enough to kill most bacteria. However, many handhelds are now being used to kill bedbugs. Which makes sense. Most of them produce steam hot enough to kill these pests and they are portable enough to be taken on the road with you if you do a lot of traveling. That way, you can rest assured that every mattress you sleep on while you are traveling is pest free.

The Cons Of A Handheld Steam Cleaner

If there is one thing you’ll learn from these guides, it’s the fact that not every steamer is perfect for all jobs. Each one has its own pros and cons. Below are some of the cons of a handheld steamer:

Not Suitable For Large Jobs

If you have a large amount of carpet or tile to clean, then one of these steamers might not be the best choice for you. I couldn’t imagine cleaning a 10’x10′ kitchen with only a handheld steamer. That would take forever.

Handheld steamers are really only made for small jobs. Like tile grout, spot cleaning, cleaning mattresses and stuff like that. Even large sofas and couches are a pain in the neck to clean with some of the handhelds. Some jobs are just too big for this device.

Not A Lot Of Steam

Saying that handheld steamers don’t have a lot of steam is sort of an arbitrary statement. After all, your cleaning might not need 2 hours of steam that many of the canisters produce. You might only need the 15 to 20 minutes of steam that most handhelds create. However, for some people, it can be inconvenient to have to refill the machine every 20 minutes to finish cleaning. It all depends on your point-of-view.

Not Suitable For Floors

If you want a steam cleaner that does floors, then you are probably not going to buy a handheld steamer. That’s because it would simply take too long. These devices don’t clean a wide enough area and don’t have a long handle – which makes them less than useless for cleaning an entire floor.

Not A Lot Of Accessories

Another thing to consider before you buy a handheld steam cleaner is whether it has the accessories you need. A lot of handhelds simply don’t have a lot of accessories that can be useful for difficult jobs. And a great many of these steamers don’t have the variety of accessories that steam canisters might have.

The Final Analysis

As you can see, handheld are great for spot cleaning and hard to reach areas, but also have a number of drawbacks as well. One being the need to have to refill it on a more regular basis during cleaning. Hopefully, this guide has helped you determine if handhelds steamers are really right for you or if you need something more like a canister, steam mop or multipurpose vacuum.

The Comforday Handheld Multi-Purpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner has a few things going for it when used to clean upholstery. One, it’s very compact and easy to take from room to room. Two, it is pretty fairly priced. Three, it delivers super-hot steam and four, it actually comes with tools that are useful for cleaning upholstery. Let’s start with its compact design.

The dimensions of this unit are 11.5 x 9.8 x 6.1 inches and it weighs about 4 pounds. Yes, you read that correctly – it weighed only 4 pounds. That means that it is light enough to carry just about anywhere. And thanks to its 9.5 foot cord, it will reach just about anywhere as well.

This unit also comes with several tools that are really kind of cool. Some of the accessories that came with it include a bent spray nozzle, a flexible extension hose, window cleaning tool, round brush nozzle and a fabric steaming tool. Not a whole lot but enough to get the job done.

The only problem I had with cleaning my upholstery is that this unit may be kind of small for large projects. While it worked great for cleaning spots on my couch, love seat and sofa, I think it would be tedious to use it to clean all of the fabric on these surfaces. Which kind of limits its use a bit.

However, it does produce steam that is as hot as 270 degrees. That is hot enough to remove just about any stain. Just be sure that you’re careful of what surfaces you use it on. After all, I imagine that steam that hot could damage some surfaces. However, with steam so hot, a lot of people are using it to kill bed bugs. I’m sure that it works perfectly for that application.

Overall, I think this is an excellent handheld steam cleaner. It’s good for smaller jobs and did a perfect job of getting my upholstery cleaned. I would definitely recommend it in a second.

To be perfectly honest, I have never even heard of the company that makes the ProduTrend Miracle Steam Handheld Steam Cleaner, so I wasn’t in a big hurry to test it out. However, once I finished with some of the more familiar handheld cleaners, I decided to circle back to this one and see how well it worked. After all, how can I find the best handheld steam cleaner out there, if I don’t try out as many of them as possible? Which is why I decided to go ahead and review it.

This handheld is about 10x9x5.8-inches and weighs around 4.3-pounds or so. It’s a 1,050-watt system with a 10-foot power cord and 9 accessories. These accessories include a Straight nozzle, a fabric nozzle, a flexible hose, an angled nozzle, a round brush, a window cleaning part, a funnel, a measuring cup and a fabric nozzle cloth. So far, so good. Now, let’s fill it with water and see how it performs.

After I had everything unpacked and I was ready to go, I tried unscrewing the cap of this unit so I could add water to it and that is when I ran into my first problem. I found that the cap was very hard to unscrew and I ended up having to have my husband unscrew it for me. Not exactly the start I was hoping to have with this handheld steamer.

I then added the 175-ml of water (about 5.6 ounces) and let it warm up. It took about 3 minutes for it to heat up, which is about average for a handheld. I then took it around and tried it out on a number of different messes I had around the house. And I started with my bathroom.

When I got it to the bathroom, I then tried it on a variety of different surfaces. I cleaned my mirrors and the glass door to my shower and I cleaned my sinks. I then used it on my bathroom tile and on the grout. In all instances, it did a great job.

So I decided to take it on other projects around my house. I cleaned my stove, my BBQ grill, the vent over my stove, my couch and love seat and just about anything else I could think of cleaning with it. It really does have good cleaning power. Unfortunately, it’s steam time is not so great.

Yes, this steamer only provided me with 12 to 15 minutes of steam before I had to let it cool down, remove the lid, fill it back up and put the lid back on. It was kind of a pain and I wished it provided a longer steam time.

Overall, I think this unit is pretty good. While it didn’t provide the greatest steam time, it did produce super hot steam that could clean a variety of surfaces quickly and efficiently.

Up for my review, is the Xtech Electric Easy Hand held Steam Cleaner. This steamer kind of reminds me of the robot maid from the Jetsons – Rosie is her name, I think. That’s because it had a large bottom, the refill cap looks like a head, and the handle and spout look like arms. While that makes it look kind of whimsical, what I’m really interested in is seeing how well it performs.

Once it arrived at my house, I unpacked it and took note of the contents. It came with a user manual, funnel, measuring cup, terrycloth cover, bent spray nozzle, long spray nozzle, spray nozzle with bristle brush, window cleaning attachment, flexible extension hose and window squeegee. After briefly browsing the manual, I decided to just go ahead and give this steamer a spin.

The first thing I did was to fill it with water. Which should have been one of the easier parts of this review. However, it turned out to be kind of a pain. In order to take off the cap, you have to apply pressure to it with the heel of your hand and then turn counter-clockwise. Which didn’t work out very well. It took me a couple of tries before I could proficiently remove the cap.

With the cap finally removed, I then put the funnel into the hole and poured out 10 ounces of water – which is what the capacity of this unit’s water tank is. I then attached the spray nozzle with bristle brush on it and proceeded to clean something that’s been bothering for a long time now. The 5×7 foot area rug in my living room. My son spilled some tropical punch on it and I just haven’t had time to try to get it out. That is, not until today.

What happened was this unit did a fantastic job of taking out the stains. After allowing it to warm up for a few minutes (3 to be exact), I was able to use the steam and bristle brush to completely lift the stain from the carpet. And it did it in only a few moments. Which I felt was pretty impressive because it had been dried on for quite some time. That sort of gave the encouragement to try out a few other tough projects with the Xtech Electric Easy Hand held Steam Cleaner.

For example, I was able to remove some dried-on grease from the glass top of my stove and I was able to do it with a minimum of fuss. I was also able to clean the windows in my living room using the included window squeegee. Using just steam – and nothing else – I was able to get those windows crystal clear. A lot cleaner than I would have if I had cleaned them with window cleaner and a rag. I also used it to get the grease off of my stove’s hood and it did it without a problem.

However, I feel like I need to give all of you a word of warning. The steam that comes out of this unit is hot, very hot. And it produces a pretty good amount of it, so be sure to be safe and follow all of the manufacturer’s safety recommendations.

Other than the refill cap, I can only see two drawbacks of this handheld steam unit. One, it’s not as compact or as light as some of the other models I’ve tried. While it’s not huge by any stretch of the imagination, it is a little bigger than what I expected. And two, it’s more expensive than a lot of other brands. However, that’s probably due to how it’s made – which is evidently very well.

All things considered, I really liked the Xtech Electric Easy Hand held Steam Cleaner. While it cost a little more than most other steamers I’ve tried, it really does a fantastic job of cleaning. There wasn’t a single job it didn’t do well for me. It is a portable steamer I’d definitely recommend to friends and family.

The Gideon Handheld Pressurized Steam Cleaner is an orange and black 1,050-watt handheld steamer that’s about 10.2×9.7×5.9-inches and weighs around 4.4-pounds or so. It’s also a steamer that has a 9-foot long power cord and comes with a number of accessories.

The first thing that caught my attention about this handheld was that it costs more than some comparable units on the market today. It wasn’t crazy expensive but still more than these other units. Price is always one of the first things I look at, and one of my prime concerns with any product, which is why I’m mentioning it here.

What I was really concerned with when I got this unit, however, was just how well it was going to work, so I put in the 12-ounces of water it uses, put on the cap and allowed it to come to temperature. In about 3-minutes, it had reached temperature and was ready to be put to work – so that’s exactly what I did.

I cleaned the mirror in my bathroom, my shower door and my bathroom tiles and noticed it did a good job with all of these surfaces. It took a little bit longer than I would’ve liked to clean my tile grout with this steamer, but in the end, it did get it done. I then took it out to my patio and garage and put it to work out there.

The next surface I used it on was my BBQ grill and it did a decent job with it, although it did take some time to cut through the grease. But by this time, I understood the reason why it was taking longer with some jobs that were done quickly by other handhelds. And that’s because it doesn’t produce as powerful of a steam jet as some other steamers do. Fortunately, it does provide a long-lasting amount of steam or about 20-minutes of steam, so it really kind of evens out a little bit.

All things considered, I think the Gideon Handheld Steam Cleaner is a pretty good handheld steamer. Sure, it’s not the best portable steam cleaner out there, but it comes really close to being a great unit. It does provide a decent amount of hot steam, but it’s just not as powerful as I would’ve liked.

I am reviewing the Dirt Devil Easy Steam Handheld Steamer PD20005. In the past, I’ve always had good luck with using Dirt Devil products. They always seemed to be well made and to do the job they were designed to do. And I sincerely hoped this product wasn’t going to be the one that ruined this brand’s reputation with me.

After I unpacked it, I gave it a thorough inspection. I noticed that it was not only nice looking – with a red body that was accented with black – but also came with a number of accessories. The accessories it came with included a jet-tip extension, squeegee tool, upholstery brush, wire grill brush and a dusting brush. It would have been nice if it had come with a larger assortment of accessories – especially considering that a wire grill brush wasn’t an attachment I was going to use on a regular basis. However, one of the attachments – the jet-tip extension – really did come in handy a little bit later while I was testing out its cleaning abilities.

I put 12 ounces of water into the unit and plugged it in. I figured it would take about 2-3 minutes to heat up, but it actually took closer to 4 minutes to completely heat up. However, once it did I noticed that the steam was pretty hot. While it wasn’t as hot as some of its competitors that I have reviewed, it was more than hot enough and did a good job of cleaning and sanitizing.

I decided the first thing I was going to use this steamer on was the grill on my deck. Since the Dirt Devil Easy Steam Handheld Steamer PD20005 had a wire grill brush and I still hadn’t put my grill away (or cleaned it for that matter), it seemed like a logical choice. And I must say this steamer did a marvelous job. I was able to melt all of that stuck on grease and grime (from cooking pork steaks, burgers and ribs) and do it with a minimal effort. It was nice, but like I said I don’t see myself using this attachment too often.

I then used the dusting brush and the squeegee tool, and all of them seemed to work very well. I also used the upholstery brush and discovered this steamer cleaned my couch and chairs as well as any other steamer I had reviewed.  However, the real surprise came when I decided to test the jet-tip extension. This little accessory is revolutionary – at least, it is in my mind.

Using this attachment, I was able to clean hard-to-reach areas I’d never have been able to reach without it. I was able to clean under the front of my stove and under the lip of my baseboards. Using it, I could shoot out a small jet of steam to take care just about any tight spot.

The jet-tip accessory wasn’t the only highlight of this steamer. I also liked how it felt in my hand. It had a real nice design and was really comfortable to use. It was also pretty lightweight, which also made it easier to use. This steamer also felt pretty durable. It didn’t feel flimsy or like it couldn’t hold up to extreme use. This is important to me and gives me the confidence to use it for just about any cleaning scenario.

Having to give everything equal consideration, I would have to say that I really love the Dirt Devil Easy Steam Handheld Steamer PD20005. It is reasonably priced, was lightweight and easy to handle, and did its job as well as any other steamer. While it would have been nice to have had a few more accessories, the ones it comes with should be good enough to get most any job done.

The next portable steam cleaner up for review is the BISSELL Steam Shot Hard-Surface Cleaner. When I first saw this portable steamer I thought that it had a nice design, so I decided to get it and see if it works as well as it looks. The following are the results that I obtained using this product.

When I first got it and opened the frustration free packaging, I noticed that this unit came with a variety of accessories. Accessories which included an accessory nozzle, extension hose, flat scraping tool, grout brush, fabric steamer, window squeegee, angle concentrator, and detail brush. I also noticed that this unit was considerable heavier than other handheld steam cleaners. A factor that came into play as I started cleaning with it for a while.

Once I had put the prescribed amount of water into it – which was 6.6 ounces of water – I inserted the lid, plugged it in and waited 3 minutes to allow it to warm up. After the 3 minutes, I then took it into the bathroom and began to clean my shower’s grout.

Its 16-foot cord really came in handy while I was cleaning my grout, too. You see, there’re no outlets in my bathroom – none at all, if you can believe it – which means that I have to plug everything into the outlet that is in the hall. Fortunately, this steamer’s cord was long enough to plug it in and still use it effectively in the shower stall. How did it perform, you’re wondering? It did great! I managed to get all of the grout clean with a minimum of fuss. And it not only cleaned out the grout but was able to get off the hard water stains on my tile. Which is no small accomplishment because the hard water in my area is pretty bad.

The next thing I tried cleaning was alongside my electric stove. I hadn’t cleaned it as often as I should have and there is a bit of grease stuck to the side of it (probably from my misadventures making fried chicken). Anyway, it’s the sort of stuck-on grease that you would normally have to scrape off. Fortunately, I had this steam cleaner to give me a hand.

It only took a few seconds and this steamer had softened the grease enough for me to wipe it off. While this steamer doesn’t get as hot as some handheld steamers, it was hot enough to handle most of the dirt, grease and grime I pitted against it. It even worked spot cleaning my linoleum floor.

Carrying the BISSELL Steam Shot Hard-Surface Cleaner around my house for about 15 minutes soon made me realize that this steamer is not as ergonomic as it should be. Because it weighs about 30-40% more than other handheld steamers, as well as the way you have to carry it to push the trigger (located on top of the handle), then it can really tire out your grip. It’s not a huge concern, but one to think about.

However, while the design I had originally liked turned against me somewhat, I did enjoy how easy this steamer made my day-to-day chores. I was able to refresh my drapes, clean out the grout in my bathroom tile, clean the fabric on my couch and clean windows. It was capable of handling so many jobs, they should have put multi-purpose in the title. I can’t think of a job that you couldn’t use this steamer on. It wasn’t as easy to use as it should’ve been, but it will get the job done.

All in all, while I wished it had been lighter and easier to handle, I think the BISSELL Steam Shot Hard-Surface Cleaner did the cleaning part to perfection. Not only could it clean a variety of surfaces – making it truly a multi-purpose steamer – but after the initial 20 minutes of steam had exhausted, it was able to cool down quickly so it could be refilled as soon as possible between jobs. It’s definitely a cleaner that could be used all over the home and garage.

Today, I’ve decided to try out the Steamfast SF-210 Everyday Handheld Steam Cleaner. I thought I would give it a go because it seemed like it was lightweight, had a long extension cord and was pretty cheap. So I bought it and anxiously awaited for it to arrive at my house.

After a few days, it arrived and I carefully unpacked the contents of the box. One of the first things I do whenever I do one of these reviews is to take care to make note of how the steamer came and the accessories it came with. I noticed the steamer came with an instruction manual and as promised, 6 accessories. These accessories were: flexible extension hose, a jet nozzle, a measuring cup, nylon utility brush, large standard brush and a brass utility brush. So far, so good.

After using the measuring cup to fill the unit up to exactly six ounces of water, I decided to go ahead and give it a spin. The first thing that I tried it on was some of my drapes because they were kind of wrinkled and could use a nice steam refresh. So I fired up the unit and went to work. As I was using the unit, I noticed a couple of things about it. One, it really does look like a watering can – you know, the one that you would use to water your household plants. It just has that shape about it. The next thing I noticed was that it was pretty quiet. A lot quieter than other handhelds I’ve used in the past. By the way, I have to say that it really did a marvelous job of refreshing my drapes. The steam wasn’t as hot as I would have liked it, but I felt it did a decent job on that particular task.

The next project I decided to tackle with the Steamfast SF-210 Everyday Handheld Steam Cleaner was getting some grease off of the glass top of my electric stove. And this unit’s performance wasn’t as good as I had hoped. Why? Well, first of all, it took a lot more elbow grease than I would have liked using. I really had to scrub to get the stuck on grease up from my stove top. The reason for that is two-fold. One, the steam just doesn’t get hot enough. After all, it is only a 900-watt unit. Two, the continuous steam only last about 10 minutes and then you have to refill, let it warm up for 3 minutes and then start again.

A task it did do well, however, was cleaning the tile in my bathroom. The steam was just hot enough to get the grime out of my grout. This little hand-held portable steamer also did well on smaller tasks that didn’t require a whole lot of elbow grease in the first place.  It definitely seems like it was made for handling smaller jobs and/or sanitizing surfaces.

The last impression I had of this portable steamer was that it didn’t feel as durable as I would have liked. Like it was made of a thin plastic. It didn’t break or anything while I was using it, I just wonder how it would hold up to long term use. However, it does come with a 1-year limited manufacturer’s warranty, so I’m sure that it would work fine for long-term use.

Now that I’ve tried the Steamfast SF-210 Everyday Handheld Steam Cleaner out on a variety of surfaces all over my house, I’ll give you my honest-to-goodness review of it. This unit is a budget steamer that I think is good for sanitizing surfaces, getting the wrinkles out of clothing or drapery and for small jobs. When I used it for these types of jobs, then it worked marvelously. However, I can’t say the same for other jobs. If you are looking for it to handle larger jobs or tougher stains, then you might want to look for a different steamer. If you just want one for spot jobs, then this unit will probably be all that you need.

I’ve been itching for a long time to try out a hand-held steamer; one that I could carry around the home to handle jobs my steam mop won’t handle. And it didn’t take a whole lot of research to figure out which one I was going to try first. Within a few moments of looking, I stumbled upon the DB Tech Hand-held Multipurpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner.

When I saw this unit I figured it had everything I wanted in a portable steam cleaner. It was advertised as being 8.8”x5.3”x11.2” and weighing just over 3 pounds. Plus, it had a long power cord, a ton of accessories and the price was right: just under $30. It was everything I was looking for so I ordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival.

When it arrived, I took it out of the box and made a note of all of the accessories it came with. The DB Tech Hand-held Multipurpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner came with: a window nozzle, squeegee, a flexible extension hose, a funnel, long spray nozzle, measuring cup, round brush nozzle. Towel sleeve and bent spray nozzle. Of course, the measuring cup and the funnel are in the kit to help you refill it – after all, it’s highly recommended that you don’t overfill it (that could damage it), so I consider this unit to really have 7 accessories. However, during my testing, I quickly realized that was all I needed to get most any job done.

Once I filled this little steamer and fired it up, the first thing I noticed was that it was loud as hell. Not enough to keep me from wanting to use it but loud enough to give me a start. I also noticed that this thing produced some pretty hot steam. A lot hotter than I thought it would produce. So if you decide to get this product, then be sure to use it safely because the steam is hot enough to burn skin.

One of the first thing that I decided to use the DB Tech Hand-held Multipurpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner on was the tile grout in my bathroom. It whizzed right through it in no time flat. Then I did my glass shower door and a number of other surfaces around my home. I noticed that it easily melted some candle wax I had on one of my end tables and also removed some old gum from the bottom of my coffee table (which was evidently left by my son).

I took it out to my car and was able to not only use the extension hose to clean out my sticky cup holders but also used it to clean the carpet and headliner. I even was able to clean my car’s rims. With each of these jobs it handled perfectly – oh, well almost perfectly. There were a few problems that I would like to discuss. For one, the material the accessories were made of was not the sturdiest of materials. It felt kind of thin to me. In fact, while I was using the extension nozzle to clean out my car, it became so hot I had to use a pair of gloves to hold it and finish the job. Not exactly what I was expecting.

It also should be noted that this unit only carries about 8 ounces of water, so you have to refill every 15 minutes. That’s not a huge deal, but it is something that needs to be mentioned. Especially if you are doing a job that’s quite a distance away from the tap.

All things considered, I felt that the DB Tech Hand-held Multipurpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner was a pretty good hand-held steamer. It did feel a little flimsy and the lack of a warranty kind of bothered me, but when it was time to get the job done it took care of every task I threw at it. And factor in its amazing cleaning ability with its low price and it’s easy to see why many people would want to buy this portable steamer.
